Louise of Hesse-Kassel, consort of Christian IX of Denmark (known - TopicsExpress

Louise of Hesse-Kassel, consort of Christian IX of Denmark (known as the father-in-law of Europe because of his childrens marriages into so many European royal houses), was born on 7 September 1817. She was a great-granddaughter of Frederick V of Denmark and granddaughter of Hereditary Prince Frederick, who acted as regent for his mentally disturbed half-brother Christian VII. She married her second cousin Christian of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg, a German prince with Danish ancestors on both sides. Their marriage strengthened Christians claim as heir to Frederick VII, who had no legitimate children. As well as her husbands heir Frederick VIII, Louises children included Queen Alexandra (wife of Edward VII), Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia (wife of Tsar Nicholas II), George I of Greece, Thyra (titular Crown Princess of Hanover and Duchess of Cumberland), and Prince Valdemar of Denmark.
