Lowest To Highest... Sept 18 Thank you all so much for your comments, calls and encouragement from my previous post. Means a lot, as I was reluctant to make any of this public. For those of you who asked, are curious, or just plain stumped, here is an attempt in many words about the why… at least as I understand it now. I have always been drawn to movement over land as a practice in awareness, at times as penetrating and profound for me as that of extended sitting meditation. It is a foundation in my life and of my work with others in nature. Over many years, I have witnessed so many individuals and groups entrain into a magic of alertness to breath and step while opening a field of attention to all that is happening around. This kind of attention, I believe, is rooted in our very DNA. It’s this same magic and a joy that I can find in riding, particularly when the distances extend and there can be an opening of awareness as the mind settles, disturbs and settles again and again. When son Nate took his training wheels off his bike 6 years ago, I did not understand the gift that was unfolding, leading me back to such a love of riding I had as a kid, to counter an ebbing vitality and in time, to become such a support in healing a broken heart. When I stood at Badwater this last spring, a complete feeling came, that I could combine riding and walking into a true pilgrimage… a journey into the very heart of walking my talk. So this is what calls me: What would it be to ride all the way through a night, starting below sea level and under a full desert moon? To join in the adventure with friends driving in support. To see the first light on the massive Eastern Sierra scarp the morning of my birthday…on a road I’ve driven countless times going to and from Death Valley. To pause, let go of the wheels and continue on foot… to the highest reaches of the Sierra, on a mountain I’ve never been on. To be in motion with the great motion of the Earth and the heavens, descending and returning safely as the sunset fades into another night… To see if this is even possible, with wisdom and devotion see what I can learn and bring back into the world. And once again, try to document the beauty. Thank you for reading all of this, I do so appreciate it.
