Lua Fonseca: After reading a few posts about Humza Yousafs - TopicsExpress

Lua Fonseca: After reading a few posts about Humza Yousafs unfortunate encounter on the streets, watching 8 out of 10 cats and reviewing some past events I decided to (as per usual) give you a piece of my mind on the subject. I know most of you, and mr. Yousaf himself considered that random display of ignorance to be skin deep, I disagree. Theres a growing acceptance in the UK for all kinds of xenophobic and racist remarks, from public TV to the sanctity of our childrens schools. Jimmy Carr made a blatantly racist joke about Polish people on that show, not to mention the sarcastic yet stripped of any intelligence jokes about the Scottish people and Robert Burns. Whats the colour difference there? Different shades of pale? As you all (or most of you) know, Im Portuguese. Im an immigrant. I have a relatively dark complexion. Im a Catholic. All of these were at some point in time an excuse to attack, humiliate and disrespect me. Whats happening in the British Isles is a reflection of its own internal policies and product of its own history, its not about peoples colours anymore, its about what they perceive as a threat to their own commodities, its about their incapacity and inability to deal with the true face of Immigration. Immigration has been part of this country since the dawn of time, theres no such thing as a true Scot, or a true Portuguese, were all the result of a genetic mix and were all fortunate enough not to be born with 3 heads. Im extremely patriotic, I love my country, my history and my people; and I love Scotland, its history and its people. Scotland is a multicultural country, a country forged by immigrants and a coutry whos own Immigrants helped forge other countries. Scotland... being Scottish or being Portuguese is not about colour nor creed, its about feeling. Next time any of you find yourself, for any reason, having negative feelings about me, or any other foreign section of the population, remember I chose Scotland, I didnt end up here because of some accident of birth, I chose this country as my home, and on the 19th of September if I wake up in the UK Ill be campaigning for an Independent Scotland the very next day. I hope to see more of these actions being condemned, and people being brought to justice, theres no excuse. Racism and xenophobia are a form of torture, its humiliating, its painful and see that feeling you get when people attack the very nature of your existence as Scottish? That anger and resentment? The humiliation you momentarily feel... we feel it too, I feel it too, I feel it for you and I feel it for myself, and every time Im told to f* off to my country I can help but thinking... Which one?
