Lucy and Nathaniell. My neighbor had a black lab named Lucy. Her dog house was a large wooden barrel on its side with some carpet tacked to the bottom. She was barking mad….literally ….. We used to have a contest; One person would distract her while the other climbed into the barrel. We would start a stopwatch once she noticed the one in her barrel. She would dive into the barrel, licking and pawing like Lucy-fur!..... I think the record for endurance was about 80 seconds! The youngest in my neighbor’s family was Nathaniell. At the time, he was about 3 or 4. We decided to make a sled for him and hitch Lucy to it. We cut down and old pair of cross country skis and screwed an old fruit crate to them. We fashioned a harness out of rope and hitched it to the front. At the time, our road was a dirt road and the plow never scraped it all the way down so there was always a layer of snow or ice banked by about a half meter of snow on the sides. We tucked Nathaniell into the sled…. It was a tight fit with his snowsuit….We brought Lucy out and put her in the harness. She took off hell bent for leather!! We lit out after them as the sled careened off of the snow banks on the sides of the road. When we finally caught up, Lucy had lunged off into the deep snow beside the road. The sled had overturned and we could hear squeeling beneath it….. We thought the worst! We flipped the sled up only to be met with peels of hysterical laughter! We sat down and started laughing along out of relief mostly. Lucy sat up to her chin in the snow panting and looking at us like we were all completely bonkers!
