Lucy has been doing a family tree as a school project, with the help from my mother who has dug out some old photos. This is a photo of my great grandparents and their 15 children (my grandfather sitting bottom left). The photo was taken in 1914 before three of the boys went off to war and two came home. I remember one of my great aunts telling me her mothers grief was profound when that news came through in 1917. Having 14 other children didnt soften the blow. But this pioneering Taranaki family was luckier than many and like many others 100 years ago posed for a family photograph before their boys went away. PS: I have lots of second cousins!
