Luke, 14, has made great progress so far at La Rabida for burn rehabilitation. The hardworking teen is nonverbal, but has recently regained some of his ability to vocalize, expressing when he is happy, sad or excited. “Luke is a wonderful patient with a resilient spirit,” said inpatient nurse Kristen Ely. “He’s such an inspiring young man.” The rehabilitation team works with Luke to increase his range of motion by having him reach for objects that are above or far away from him; assemble puzzles while seated or lying down, and other simple exercises. “Our team is working together to try to get Luke back to where he was developmentally before his accident,” said Kristen. “We’re helping him with daily living tasks, such as using the bathroom with minimal assistance and feeding himself, as well as providing burn care through dressing changes, scar massage, medications and rehab. He’s doing great!
