Luke 8:19-25 Jesus’ family When we think about Jesus we may forget that He had an earthly family. Matt. 13 lists His earthly family members: Matthew 13:53-56 Common English Bible (CEB) 53 When Jesus finished these parables, he departed. 54 When he came to his hometown, he taught the people in their synagogue. They were surprised and said, “Where did he get this wisdom? Where did he get the power to work miracles? 55 Isn’t he the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother named Mary? Aren’t James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas his brothers?56 And his sisters, aren’t they here with us? Where did this man get all this?” 57 They were repulsed by him and fell into sin. Luke 8:19-22-Jesus’ Family 19 Jesus’ mother and brothers came to him but were unable to reach him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” 21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who listen to God’s word and do it.” Matt. 13:19-21 There is a time when we leave our parents and form our own family unit. We love our families and celebrate holidays and other occasions with them. But, we have responsibilities that take us away from our families. In this account Jesus’ earthly family came to a meeting where He was speaking. Jesus’ reply to the person who told Him that his family came to see Him may sound strange. But, Jesus came to earth with a mission. That mission was His primary concern. He identified His followers as part of His family. Jesus’ responsibility now was to tend to all who listen to God’s word and do what God says. Those who follow and do God’s Word are part of God’s family. No member of the family is above another. All are important to God. In Matthew 16 Jesus explains what it means to be His follower. Family ties are not part of the qualification. Jesus came into a family, but His true family consists of all who follow Him. Matt. 16:24-25 Saving and losing life 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. 25 All who want to save their lives will lose them. But all who lose their lives because of me will find them.” Jesus calms the sea Luke 8:22-25 Have you ever noticed that when you learn something new about God and how He works in our lives you soon have a chance to practice what you learned? Jesus said that those who listen to Him are His mother and brothers. When the disciples and Jesus got in a boat to cross over the other side of the lake, a gale-force wind came up. The disciples became afraid when the boat filled with water. Jesus was asleep. When His disciples woke Him up they were panic-stricken. Jesus gave orders to the wind and the storm calmed down. Jesus calmed the storm. Jesus also calmed the storm of fear that came into the hearts of His disciples. Luke 8:22-25-Jesus calms life’s storms that are physical or mental within our lives. 22 One day Jesus and his disciples boarded a boat. He said to them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” So they set sail. 23 While they were sailing, he fell asleep. Gale-force winds swept down on the lake. The boat was filling up with water and they were in danger. 24 So they went and woke Jesus, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” But he got up and gave orders to the wind and the violent waves. The storm died down and it was calm. 25 He said to his disciples, “Where is your faith?” Filled with awe and wonder, they said to each other, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him!” My prayer for you today is that during this time of year your time with your family will be a blessing. But, remember that you are also a member of God’s family. Also, life’s storms are calmed when we ask God to lead and guide us.
