Luke Shaw impressed many today with his performance against Crystal Palace but Michael Carrick was the real hero for United today. Crystal Palace weren’t able to put much pressure on the makeshift United defence today and that was partly a result of Michael Carrick’s positional sense just in front of the back four. Carrick may not be the most athletic player, but he possesses great awareness around him as well as the ability to identify and quickly deal with potential danger. He won three of four tackles and he completed 96 passes during the game (89%). His heat map shows that he did a lot of running during the game and as a result began to tire after playing such little football this season resulting in van Gaal switching Blind to midfield and moving carrick to defence.
