MADD Recognizes Amherst Police for Drunk Driving Efforts AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB) — Mothers Against Drunk Driving honored Amherst Police Tuesday for their commitment to enforce drunk driving laws in the town and their work to prevent underage drinking. The department was presented with the “Police Department of the Month” award, which qualifies to possibly win the “Department of the Year” awawrd from MADD. So far in 2014, Amherst Police have arrested 77 people for operating under the influence. The organization also recognized Amherst on their participation in national crackdown and mobilization efforts, like “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” “It’s a great honor. In the past, we’ve had specific officers honored for this award, but first time we have received an award for the whole department, and their efforts in OUI enforcement and prosecution. I couldn’t be happier…total team effort and really happy for people in the department,” explains Amherst Police Chief Scott Livingstone. Amherst was the first department in western Mass. to win this award.
