MADISON - First-year MRA coach Herbert Davis and quarterback Hayden Davis held an impromptu father-son meeting about 30 minutes prior to Friday night’s season-opener. One of the topics of discussion was which play to call on the first play of the game. “We talked about it and decided we wanted to go deep and make a big play early,” said Hayden, with a big smile. Davis did just that, connecting with Ian Dixon on an 82-yard touchdown pass to help catapult MRA to an easy as it sounds 56-0 victory over visiting Glenbrook. Before many of the large contingent of Patriot fans had a chance to really settle into their seats on a hot, humid night, Davis one-handed a high snap from center in the shotgun and heaved a perfect spiral to a streaking Dixon down the middle of the field. Dixon hauled it in and raced to the end zone. A few seconds into the game and the rout was on. It was an emphatic start to the 2014 season, and the Herbert Davis era. “I knew we were capable of pulling it off as long as Ian ran a good route,” Hayden said. “I told him to be ready, and he was. We executed it well.” The Davis to Dixon bomb was the first of many highlights on the night for MRA, which was playing its first game on the newly-installed artificial turf. The Patriots scored early and often racing to a 42-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. MRA – showcasing its new up-tempo spread offense -added yet another touchdown in the second quarter to go ahead 49-0, prompting game officials to mercifully run the clock continuously. The Patriots scored just once after that – on a pick 6 by Tanner Propst in the second half – for the final 56-point margin. Herbert Davis was pleased with his team’s debut performance, although he saw plenty of room for improvement leading into next week’s showdown at PCS. “We did what we were supposed to do early on,” he said. “That’s about all you can say. It was a good first win for us. It’s always good to get that first win at home like that. I thought we executed really well. We had a few penalties, and I don’t like that. But overall I thought we played pretty good. Everybody got to play, and that’s good. And we didn’t have any injuries, which is a good thing. “Now we’ve got to get back in here on Monday and get ready for PCS. We’ve got a lot of things we need to work on. So things are really going to pick up for us. We only played about one quarter tonight really, so that’s a concern…conditioning. But, like I said, overall I was pleased.” Hayden Davis completed 7 of 8 passes for 211 yards and threw three touchdown passes. One of those went to Karter Bounds, who has missed much of preseason practice with a foot injury and was questionable as late as Friday afternoon. But the standout slot receiver traded his boot for a pair of cleats and played just as he had promised his teammates and coaches. “He ran some routes yesterday and looked good,” Davis said. “He felt good about it. He did the same thing today and felt good about it again so we decided to go ahead and let him play. Obviously, that was good news for us.” Graham Joyner caught Davis’ other touchdown pass. Clint Moses rushed for a game-high 62 yards on four carries, including a 5-yard touchdown run as part of the Patriots’ first-quarter onslaught. Davis and Noah Joyner also added a touchdown run apiece and Seth Blanton recovered a Moses’ fumble in the end zone to get his name into the scoring column. “It was a good night,” Moses said. “A lot of people came out and supported us…it was exciting. We came out and all of us did a good job. It felt good to get that first win, especially playing here at home.”
