It is considered that to have some feelings of reverence towards your ancestors is known as shraddh. The date (tithi) on which our ancestors died, on the same date their shraddh is performed. It is believed that till the 15 days of Ashwin Krishna Paksha our ancestors come to Earth and get satisfied by the oblation made by their descendants and go away.
