Went out to observe Hawk that Mike fahay, and Rob Speirs had reported in this area earlier this week. It was behind #15 Ridge road when I first arrived, perched in a stand of Poplar trees, It soon moved to another perch in a willow tree in the field behind #19 Ridge road, it is hunting the large field and wet areas behind the church. I got some nice looks thru the noc,s. Beautiful bird! It seems to be staying in the area and I will try to get a photo to verify. Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) (1) CONFIRMED - Reported Jan 25, 2015 10:10 by Gary Jarvis - Auburn Riverwalk, Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine - Map: maps.google/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=44.0927571,-70.2251109&ll=44.0927571,-70.2251109 - Checklist: ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S21536176 - Comments: Swooped in quickly over the river from the east (presumably chasing a Pigeon) before dropping out of view behind some trees on the Auburn side. Only got a brief look, but ID was based on the pointed shape of the wings and its call, which was slower and more gull-like than what would be expected from a Coopers Hawk (the only other bird around here with which I might have potentially confused it). Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) (1) CONFIRMED - Reported Jan 25, 2015 10:45 by Craig Kesselheim - Bass Harbor Light, Hancock, Maine - Map: maps.google/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=44.2219221,-68.3371925&ll=44.2219221,-68.3371925 - Checklist: ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S21531811 - Comments: Fly-by seen from lighthouse parking lot. Heading into stiff wind with scythe-shaped pointed wings and rapid soaring over cliff-face; then streaked past on return stoop at amazing speed to some out-of-sight prey. Large falcon silhouette and behavior were my primary ID cues.
