MAJOR Debo Bashorun (rtd), the former military press secretary to ex-military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, will launch a book on the assassination of then editor and founder of Newswatch magazine, Dele Giwa. Coming 27 years after Giwas murder, the book titled, Honour for Sale: An Insider Account of the Murder of Dele Giwa, is billed for launch by 11:00a.m on Friday, 22nd November at the Freedom Park, Broad Street, Lagos, and is set to expose the intrigues behind the assassination of the seasoned journalist. Bashorun told The Guardian Monday during his courtesy visit to its Rutam House headquarters in Lagos that the launch was coming at an appropriate time when his actions would not be misunderstood for political gains or personal aggrandisement. According to him, the facts in the book are not new because he has already initiated a civil action against the then administration but could not get justice before he eventually fled the country to escape elimination. I am writing this because it is high time Nigerians came to develop a high sense of accountability. The issue of impunity, where people are being killed anyhow, should stop. This is one of the reasons this country is stagnated despite the abundant resources God has given us, he said. If you can remember, when we talk about Dele Giwa, there are a lot of journalists who have been killed after Giwa and nobody has raised an eyebrow or a finger. This is what this book is meant to do, to prick the conscience of Nigerians to be aware of the attempt to stop this indiscriminate killing of people. We have to get those people at the helm of affairs to account for their stewardship. The presentation of this book is timely because there are no elections yet, I do not belong to any political party. I do not want people to think I am doing this for money. I am a contented person. I am mature in age and I think one of the things I owe this country is patriotism. He said the book aims to expose those behind the murder of Giwa, how it was planned, the mission I was given, my refusal to carry out the assignment and the whole thing that transpired, which led to my being marked for destruction. Describing the book as detailed, he said he has evidence of everything contained in it because it is a graphic account of what really happened.
