MAKATI TRANSPORT AND TRAFFIC SUMMIT 2013 AIMS FOR "SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT, INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEM, SMALL CITY CONCEPT" posted by : icrd on 10/01/2013 Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay today said the Makati Transport and Traffic Summit 2013 to be held on Thursday, October 3, aims for the integration of innovative and modern concepts into the new Makati Transport and Traffic Plan, which will be crafted from the Summit plenary and workshop sessions. Binay expressed optimism over the outcome of the Summit spearheaded by the city government. “I believe that Makati City will be able to develop a modern transport plan that is risk-sensitive, energy efficient and attuned with the changing climate and environment,” Binay said. “Expansion of walkways and underpasses under the pedestrianization program would further lessen the use of motor vehicles in the city, with around 300,000 individuals using the network of walkways daily,” he added. Among the initiatives being eyed for the establishment of a sustainable transport program for the city are the provision of incentives to green transport proponents, walkway expansion, development of bikeways and bike stations, among others. Plans for an Intelligent Transportation System, on the other hand, will include automation and full upgrade and operation of the Makati Traffic Signal System and the full integration of the Makati Command Control and Communication (C3) Center into the transport system, together with the expansion of CCTV coverage at transit stations and terminals. Binay said these plans are all aligned to the ‘small city concept’, which aims to develop communities wherein students are able to live near their schools, and employees and workers near their workplaces. Other agenda for exploration during the workshops under four sectors – Sustainable Urban Transport, Traffic Enforcement, Traffic Engineering, and Traffic Education – include the review and updating of the color-coding scheme of tricycles and pedicabs by area of operation and issuance of franchises to these modes of transport; in-city, inter-CBD transport systems; connectivity of MRT, ferry and PUJ stations at Guadalupe; senior citizens privileges in transport and traffic management; traffic enforcement campaign on rules and regulations to minimize road friction; and mandatory uniform traffic management course on traffic enforcement for all traffic enforcers. Relevant initiatives to be taken up during the workshops include the provision of special traffic enforcement tools (such as breath analyzer, speed gun, PDAs) designed for traffic enforcement use; advance course for the traffic enforcement group; participation of the mass media, local government, students, academe, and private sector in traffic education and information campaign; re-education of drivers, traffic officers, and other road users; outreach program for the barangays, transport sector, traffic volunteers, etc.; and establishment of a Transport and Traffic Central Database System interfacing with the Makati City Traffic Command Center. The general thrust of the summit will be modern technology, intelligent transport, and green mobility that includes various energy efficient vehicles that use alternative fuels. The Summit will open on Thursday at the City Hall Quadrangle at 8:30am, to be followed by the plenary session at the Session Hall, 22/F New Makati City Hall Building. The breakout sessions for the workshop will begin at 12:00 noon, to be followed by the presentation of outputs. More than 200 participants are expected to attend the Summit, including representatives from various sectors and groups, such as urban and transport planners, experts, members of the academe, transport groups, civil society and people’s organizations, media firms, and national, regional and local agencies and units. Meanwhile, around 23 companies and firms will participate in the exhibit to showcase their products and best practices on green mobility and intelligent transportation. It will be held on October 3 and 4 at the Makati City Hall Quadrangle.
