New procedures are developed regularly to make surgeries more appealing to patients. Smaller scars, faster return to work, and less pain are often touted as reasons to undergo minimally invasive procedures. Just like I wont buy the first model year of any car I also wont allow my patients to be the beta testers for new procedures that are not tested by time and neutral (read not profiting) investigators. I have watched many techniques come and go once they were proven bad. I have revised hundred of patients who underwent all sorts of new implants and techniques only to go on with no relief or even worse problems. I will never be the surgeon who tries new techniques on my patients.
