MAKERERE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES OFFICE OF THE STUDENT LEADERS 20th September 2013 PROPOSAL FOR THE 9TH OCTOBER 2013, COMMUNITY OUTREACH AT ST. FRANCIS NAGGALAMA HOSPITAL Background Makerere University College of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the Colleges with the largest number of students. It is made up of five Schools; School of Gender and Women Studies, School of Psychology, School of Languages Literature and Communications, School of Social Sciences and School of Liberal and Performing Arts. It is also running the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR). Each School Elects student’s leaders who elect among them selves a governing board to guide, over see and run both the School and College Students activities such as Protecting students’ Rights and interests, Public Lectures, Dialogues, Debates Community Outreaches Sports gala, also acts as a go between the students and administration among others. Every academic year, as part of the Independence celebrations, we reach back to the community. Last year Jubilee celebrations we traced the origin of Western Medicine by carrying out an Outreach to Mengo Hospital as the Pioneer Hospital (by Dr. Sir Albert Cook). This year, we have focused on a better future young generation (Youth and Children) through Moral change and the best way to do this is through Supporting and sensitizing Mothers because they play a great role in Moral building of the children and youth. With that background, we came with a Theme “Supporting Mothers, Investing in a Better Future Young Generation”. Why we Choose St. Francis Naggalama Hospital? St. Francis Naggalama runs a Church, Schools (Primary and Secondary), and a Hospital among others. The Hospital is a referral centre for most of the health unites in the area and receives quite a number of patients mostly mothers. In the Area, the hospital is located next to the secondary and primary schools of the St. Francis Naggalama and a Church where most villages come together for worshiping. We therefore so it fitting to sensitize the women and youth of this area, also the school receives students from various places and this is an opportunity to spread the message to the whole nation. Activities We plan to carry out the following activities. Sensitizing mothers and other people on various aspects of life such as sanitation, health, rights to mention but a few. General cleaning. We plan to clean the hospital premises and wards as a sign of encouraging sanitation. Blood donation. This is a key sign of saving a life to reduce the blood shortage in the country. Also it is aimed at showing the nation that it’s everyone’s responsibility to save a life. Guidance and Counseling to both the youth and women. Among others Note: we thought it wise to use such activities to sensitize mothers and youth for a better future generation man also reduce youth involvement in bad activities. Partnership We are open and welcoming all partners in various field voluntary/ manpower or financial support. Among our partners so far include Makerere University Students St Francis Naggalama Hospital Rwenzori Bottling Company Ltd. We also plan to partner with: Foundation for Human Right Initiative Cancer Institute USAID among others Note: We welcome any body either man power (volunteers) of financial support for the success and effectiveness of this activity. Relevancy to students The college enrolls students in different fields such as Gender and women studies, Ethics and human rights, Community psychology, social scientists, Communication specialists, Journalism, Public Relations, Development studies, performing arts among other. This is going to be a chance for them to give back to the community and also practice what they studied Also with partnership, its going to give students a clear interact and practice with professionals in there field. Conclusion We call upon all parties who can participate in this to consider the request and participate as it will be a foot step to the free, enlightened, educated and sensitized future young generation to reduce increased moral degeneration and terror. It will also be a footstep to the uplifting mother’s knowledge towards their role in the better future young generation and also mother’s health shall be considered We therefore, encourage all parties to do their best to have this students cause effective as we build for the future.
