MAKING HERBAL SHAMPOO (3): ************************** 1- great consistency : it means not very thick and sticky nor watery one ..it is a matter of slef satisfaction and appearance..nobody likes watery shampoo and nobody likes very sticky shampoo..you can thicken your shampoo with one or more of the following thickners : a- sodium chloride : but it works only with systems based on Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)and Cocamidopropyl Betaine . but you just need minute amount to adjust your shampoo thickness above which the micelle system will be corrupted and it will lose its consistency . b- ammonium chloride : and this is used with the sulfonates or sulfates surfactants . c-Other cationic metals can be used, potassium, magnesium salts. Magnesium salts are twice as effective as they are 2+ species. But Ca2+ & Zn+ produce such insoluble salts that precipitation is instant. Magnesium is not recommended . * advs.:cheap , gives good consistency ,good stability . * disadv.: harsh , irritant and dehydrating to some types of scalps ** IN OUR CASE ( HERBAL SHAMPOO ) SUCH SALTS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED BECAUSE YOU ARE FROMULATING MILD TREATING SHAMPOO , AND HERBAL EXTRACTS CAN DESTABLIZE THE SALT/ SURFACTANT SYSTEM .
