MALACCA: S Sothinathan made a political comeback in MIC when he secured the highest number of votes in the MIC vice-president election while Deputy Youth and Sports Minister M Saravanan defended his post and Johor leader S Balakrishnan came in third. Sothinathan, a former deputy minister and a former party vice-president as well as a former party secretary-general, garnered 717 votes in the election held yesterday while Saravanan was close behind with 716 votes. Businessman Balakrishnan secured 683 votes. The rest failed of the candidates in their bid with Perak State Assembly Speaker and incumbent SK Devamany managing 332 votes, former Youth chiefs T Mohan and SA Vigneswaran 530 and 570 votes respectively, party treasurer-general Jaspal Singh (670 votes) and MIC Bukit Bintang division deputy chief James Selvaraja (52 votes). MIC president G Palanivel announced the results at a press conference here today after the opening of the party’s 67th annual general meeting by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak. The results were delayed after recounts were conducted due to some mistakes in ballot-counting which started at 4pm at the venue of the AGM, the Equatorial Hotel here yesterday. Palanivel clarified that there were only two rounds of recounting which ended at 5.20am today. Following is the official results for the vice president posts at MIC’s polls: 1. S Sothinathan: 717 votes 2. M Saravanan: 716 3. S Balakrishnan: 683 4. Jaspal Singh: 670 5. SA Vigneswaran: 572 6. T Mohan: 530 7.
