MALAGA WEATHER UPDATE Thursday 26th June 2014: Good sunny morning to you all. I hope todays forecast finds you all in fine fettle geared up for that silly season that is summer :) .........Not much I can say about the weather except its going to be sunny today, white fluffy bits in places and local winds kicked off by that sun baking on hot mountain surfaces!!!........Tomorrow there will be sun in the west, sun in the south, sun in the north and in the Far East sun!!!.......and it will be getting hotter right up that middle bit as well!!!.......And guess what weve got in store for you this weekend???.........Nop, wrong!!!.......Its sun!!!.......Yes, that sun continues to reign supreme right across the weekend. There is a risk building of seeing high winds over the weekend and we are watching in case that develops but nothing to stop you sun worshipers from going about your business other than being sand blasted up those crevices!!!.......and as I sit here and scan the charts for that next talking point on the weather, all I can say is Monday sun, Tuesday Sun etc. etc.........Temperatures over the weekend will be way up in the naked degrees on the Fraser Scale and there may even be a risk of that being topped with temperatures heading up into the Frazzled top of the scale!!!........So, with a bit of time on our hands lets talk El Nińo........Now this term is Spanish and when spelt in this capitalised form it means Christs Child!!!.......As most of you will also know, it is a name given by South American fisherman to a weather phenomenon that is regarded as having a major impact on the climate around the world including on little not-so-old us!!!......So what is El Nińo?........Its climatic technical acronym these days is ENSO (El Nińo-Southern Oscillation) and is really in two parts hence the two part technical term!!!........Most people that have read about the El Nińo effect regard it as a change in sea temperatures off the South American Coast but this is just the start!!!.......This sea temperature rise during an El Nińo event creating a mere 0.5 degree rise, extends way across the Pacific Ocean from its source off the Coast of South America in the area of the equator!!!......This sea temperature rise then kicks off the lesser known stage of warming the trade winds thus the Southern Oscillation side cuts in. Now when you start playing with the trade winds it has all sorts of side effects and many weather patterns change because the heat causes stronger winds that in turn causes them to alter position......and this is now a proven fact!!!........So, why talk about it?.......An El Nińo is not exactly predictable and has a cycle of between 2 to 7 years between events. As it stands right here right now, there is a 70% chance of the event kicking off during this summer and an 80% chance of it kicking off during the autumn of this year. Now if we see this event occur you can bet your bottom dollar it will bring us grief here in the south of Europe this winter!!!......It is fact that in an El Nińo year the European weather changes to way below blinking freezing but dry in the north and warm, stormy and very wet in Southern Europe........Now I realise that pretty much everyone way up on the Costa Brava must be thinking that El Nińo is happening right now what with all the rain theyve had this year so far, but trust me when I say its not happening yet.......you just live in the wrong place!!!.......But El Nińo is also attributed to famines in Africa, droughts in Australia, Heavier Monsoons in India, plagues of insects in the USA, and a general upheaval to the worlds food stocks in terms of fish production and crops!!!.......So, that means that as of today we have to add a watch for El Nińo as well as a fire watch as this may tell us what sort of a winter to expect!!!...... so if you see it, post it up on this page and dont forget to say where you are!!!.......Jim Fraser for the Local Fire & Weather & El Nińo Watch Network :)
