MALANDA NOTES. (For the Post and Herald.) 14 November 1918 Quite a change has occurred in the unpleasantly dry and dusty weather conditions recently prevailing. On Wednesday night last light rains set in after mild thunderstorms and up to Friday morning there were some nice showers which have, I hear, been pretty general over most of the district. Already there is a very noticeable change. Just as the pale pink blush steals over the downy cheeks of every young thing (of forty and under) when she get her blue goo-goo eyes glued on a possible affinity, so is the green of the new spring swiftly stealing into the brown of the dried up pastures. The local cow agriculturist now wears smiles of prosperity where once sat looks of gloom. The milk supply has already jumped fifty per cent — all is well. A youngster named Jubb had a rather narrow escape of serious injury this week at Malanda while coming down to one of our beautiful low-level bridges for which this shire is famous, the vehicle, on the front seat of which the lad was riding, got out of control and the boy was thrown off over the front, the wheels passing over his legs. For the time being it seemed as if he was seriously injured, but fortuuately later reports indicate he is doing well. That his legs were not even broken, which is remarkable considering it was a fairly heavy five-horse waggon. The Malanda butter factory is being steadily pushed oh towards completion. Mr. Mears, engineer for Messrs. Waugh and Josephson, assisted by Mr. Crockett (late Royal Naval Engineer), is busy installing the machinery and plant and is making very fine progress. A recent inspection by the managers Mr. J. E. ONeill, brought out the opinion that for its size, Malanda factory was one of the finest In Australia. The influenza epidemic still continues to hold sway here, every train sees someone off to see the doctor, and it is quite a common thing now when inquiring about persons missing for a few days, to learn that they are in the hospital at Atherton.
