MALLALA ROUND TWO WRAP BY WINNING THE second round at Mallala Motorsport Park last weekend, April 26-27, Blackwell Race Engines Holden Commodore VT driver Gavin Ross has taken the lead in the DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG Australian Super Six Touring Car Series. The Victorian won race one and finish with seconds in the hard-fought subsequent outings to finish the round with 170 points, just four more than second placed Kane Baxter-Smith in his Pfitzner Performance Gearboxes Ford Falcon AU out of Queensland. “We might not have been the fastest in qualifying but the consistency in the car meant we could repeatedly lap in the same times,” Ross offered. Meanwhile Baxter-Smith in the leading Ford, made three now-customary gun starts, one of which (race two) reaped the reward of being able to hold on to for a victory while NSW’s Luke Westall continued a trouble-free run this season in the Transley Solution AU to be third for the round culminating in a fifth and a fourth race placing. Coming into the round Travis Lindorff was the series leader, but he just couldn’t nail a good suspension setup in the Pakenham Tyres Holden. He wasn’t able to match the front runners but at least salvaged fourth for the round. After winning race one on Saturday April 26, Ross was a close second in the following day’s race two, and trailed Shawn Jamieson’s Morphett Vale Garages Holden home in the third. The latter’s team mate Wayne King finished third in Sunday’s opener but wouldn’t start the last due to technical issues. Starting rear of the grid Jamieson charged through the second race grid to finish fourth while Matt Lovell elected not to start rear of grid (as he did in race one) and finished sixth ahead of Lindorff, the 501 Performance Falcons of Bret Edwards and Ben Grice, and Harley Phelan’s Kleenduct Commodore. Division Two points leader Mark Primmer failed to finish this race. He spun at turn nine, and as he slide across the start/finish line, was hit by Tony Auddino’s First National AU which had nowhere else to go. Lovell was fifth in the last ahead of Lindorff, the West Aussies Chris Lillis (Cachet Homes Holden) and Rick Gill (Rick Gill Motorcycles Falcon) while Jason Leoncini (Inland Motor Body Works Holden) finished tenth after failing to finish race one and starting from the back. Auddino was sitting second in the Division Two standings but despite his and Primmer failing to finish one race, remain one and two in the points. Still finding his feet in the category, Ben Grice has moved to third following his division third for the weekend behind class novice Brad Day (Street Fighter Commodore) and Edwards.
