MAN JAILED FOR FIVE YEARS FOR SHEFFIELD RAPE A man has been jailed for five years for raping a woman at La Chambre, in Sheffield, in October 2013. Jeremy Frazer Newsome Smith, 45, of Regent Street, London, was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court today (Wednesday 3 September). Smith denied the charges but was convicted on Thursday 7 August after a three day trial. Smith was working as a performer at the club in Attercliffe on the night of the assault, which took place in the early hours of 27 October. His victim, a 20-year-old woman, was at the club with friends for a Halloween fancy dress party. Smith took the victim into an outside smoking area where he raped her. The woman reported it to the manager before reporting it to police the same night. Investigating officer PC Jessica Hawley said: “South Yorkshire Police takes all reports of rape extremely seriously and will work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice. “Smith denied the offence and forced his victim to relive her ordeal in court, which must have been incredibly hard for her. “I would like to praise her for the tremendous courage and dignity she has shown during the investigation and court case. “This man is now rightly starting a lengthy prison term and I hope today’s sentencing allows the victim to move forward with her life.”
