MANILA, Philippines - Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, archbishop of Manila, gave a brief speech before the crowd gathered for the anti-corruption rally at Luneta Monday, urging people to collectively act like heroes, and prove to the world that "marangal ang mga Pilipino [Filipinos are honorable people]." The cardinal, who recently weigned in on the massive protest against misuse of pork barrel as it moved him to tears, defined "marangal" as people who are God-fearing, have respect for life, are charitable towards people, patriotic and pro-environment. He spoke mostly in Filipino. The cardinal challenged Filipinos to prove their being honorable people everywhere they are-- in the marketplaces, sidewalks and anywhere they converge or transact business, in banks, in the mass media, on text and the Internet, in police precincts, military camps, in courts, in places of worship, and in all levels of government from Congress and the Executive offices; on land, air and sea, in any part of the world. "Inaanyayahan ko ang lahat na tignan, dinggin at mahalin ang mga dukha at naghihirap bilang tunay nating kapwa at kapatid...pakinggan ang tibok ng puso ng ating bayan.. pakinggan ang tinig ng Diyos, lalo na sa ating kunsensiya [I invite everyone to look at, heed the plea and love the poor and suffering among us; listen to the pulse of the people; listen to the voice of God, especially in our consciences]." He said reforms can also be best achieved by using the systems and processes as a means to heroism. "Tayo na pong magbayanihan...sama sama at sabay sabay na maging bayani [Together, let us all strive towards heroism]," Tagle said. He then led the community in singing a capella a church song, "Pananagutan" [Responsibility] with the theme of looking out for each other. interaksyon/article/69365/cardinal-tagle-lets-show-the-world-we-are-honorable-people
