MANILA — Rain or Shine rookie Jericho Cruz made the key baskets down the stretch as the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters outlasted the Alaska Aces, 98-95, in Friday nights dramatic PBA Philippine Cup clash at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.Rain or Shine now shares the second spot with Alaska with an identical 8-2 win-loss cards. San Miguel Beer still holds the top spot with a superior 8-1 record.Cruz, who finished with 16 points and five rebounds, put back a missed free throw by Jeff Chan in the dying seconds before nailing a breakaway layup that sealed the victory with 0.7 to go.In the ensuing play, JVee Casio tried to save ALaska from the loss but his baseline three-point attempt was way off the mark.But Cruz put only the finishing touches to the win. Paul Lee and Beau Belga were the ones that had the E-Painters keep up with the Aces when the latter was trying to chip away.Down 85-91 in the final three minutes, Belga hit back-to-back baskets before a deep triple by Lee tied the count at 93-all.Calvin Abueva got Alaska back on top, 95-03. Chan missed his second free throw in the next possession but Cruz was there for a putback.Alaska was actually in control for the most part, leading by as much as seven points in the final quarter only to falter in the crucial moments.
