Industrial revolution broke down and capitalism and socialism grew. There was already advancement in science and technology: Darwin’s “Origin of Species”, and the Morse’s telegraph was invented. The keynote for Romantic spirit was freedom: political, economic, religious, personal, and artistic. The common purpose is the free expression of man’s feelings about himself, about humanity and about the world in which he lives. Frederic Chopin (1810-1849)- He is from Poland, he was one of the leading composer of the Romantic period. - He was known as the “ Poet of the Piano”. - His music is among the greatest ever written for the piano, such as his etudes, nocturnes, preludes, concertos, ballads, polonaises, waltzes and mazurkas. - Piano was the most important instrument of the period. Compositions of Chopin 1. Etude- it is a study. It is a piece that develops technical skills and sometimes composed for public performances. “Etude no. 3 in E”, a work of Chopin known as “No Other Love”. 2. Nocturne- it is a piece which is supposed to suggest the atmosphere of night. It is a small piece without fixed form and dreamy and romantic in character. “Nocturne in E flat” it became popular because of the song “To Love Again”. 3. Polonaises, waltz, and Mazurkas are all dance forms in triple meter but with different rhythmic pattern. Chopin’s polonaises this great love for his country. 4. Chromaticism is also an important factor in his music.
