MARINE TREASURES MONTH of September. Treasure #2: Feather star! (Crinoid) Feather stars belong to the class Crinoidea. They are usually found on sea beds clinging to corals or rocks with root like structures called cirri. One of its distinctive features is its arms, (you can see them in action in the video :D) which they use for both locomotion and feeding. Feather stars do not usually move about freely, but if they need to, they crawl using their arms to flee from danger. Their arms have sticky pinnules which they use to trap planktonic organisms which they feed on. Trapped food is brought to the mouth via food grooves which run along their arms.
