MARITAL FORMATION 101 (88) – CONFLICT MANAGEMENT (ROLE SWITCH) ‘Role Switch’ is another critical issue that many successful marriages have had to deal with. This usually happens when a spouse finds him/herself playing a role he/she is naturally not suited for but has to do for the sake of the team. This has made many to also switch partners forgetting that great coaches stick to a player not only because he is doing well but because his presence means so much to the team. What do you do as a woman when you suddenly become the breadwinner; or how do you handle when, as a man, you have to run the kitchen or home affairs? What do you do when you become both a father and a mother due to the absence of your spouse? There are happenstances no one pray for but occurs in a lot of relationships. Sometimes a man may not earn well perhaps because he is a startup entrepreneur, yet the wife is an employee with consistent and guaranteed income. As a wife, that you earn more than your husband isn’t enough reason to usurp his authority and become the head – barking out instructions. I have seen a lot of men whose esteem has been messed up due to their inability to provide. I am not talking about lazy men who have become irresponsible. As a wife, your income may be the seed that sustains the family for some time before his business blossoms; so be careful how you talk and act. It’s a team game and you may need to act as the goalkeeper to cover up for the family till the real goalkeeper gets back on his feet.
