MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 80 THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY–HUGO MONTENEGRO (#2, 1968, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly) The one and only entry in this countdown for the late, great Hugo Montenegro (September 2, 1925-February 6, 1981), Montenegro was able to take the main theme of another great instrumentalist, Ennio Morricone, and turn The Good, The Bad & The Ugly into a No. 2 hit in June 1968, missing out on hitting No. 1 behind another movie song thats coming up later in this countdown. The movie was the third part of a trilogy of spaghetti westerns directed by Sergio Leone after A Fistful Of Dollars and For A Few More Dollars, each movie starring a young Clint Eastwood as The Man With No Name. In this movie, he stars alongside two other legends, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach. The plot revolves around the three gunslingers trying to find hidden treasure in a Confederate gold cache during the American Civil War. The western was released in Italy first on December 15, 1966, and did not get to America for its release until December 23, 1967, which was normal since it would be months between the Italian and American releases of the other two parts of the trilogy. Before he became a crime fighter in such films as Dirty Harry and Sudden Impact and also became an award-winning director, Eastwood (born May 31, 1930, in San Francisco) cut his teeth as a cowboy in westerns, but the highlight was this trilogy. Theres another song from another Eastwood movie coming up a little later on in this countdown. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
