*** MARLIN ON A SARAGOSA-SW *** shimanofishing.co.nz/products/reels/spinning/saragosa-sw Kurt just sent in this cool report in…awesome On Sunday the 30th of March 2014 we headed out from the Bay of Islands in pursuit of Marlin. I was very keen to try and catch a marlin on my new Shimano Saragosa. This lead to a change in our standard tactics of lure fishing or straight live baiting (as there was no sign of any bait) so we decided to remove the hooks from the lures and just run them as teasers. We would then tease the fish in and pitch a live bait back on the Saragosa. That was the plan. It was not long after we set the gear we spotted the distinct dorsal fin of a very nice stripe marlin. It come in on the short rigger teaser and gave it a whack, the fish then switched to almost every teaser but as the live bait was presented on the Shimano Saragosa, the temptation was to great and we were bit. As we hooked the fish we immediately started chasing it down. The high retrieve of the Saragosa was outstanding and ideal for this type of fishing. As we gained line we noticed the fish had a wrap of the leader around itself which meant we weren’t pulling from the favourable position being the fish’s mouth. The fish then disappeared into the depths and there was nothing we could do. As time went on we realised we had to something to get this fish up, so the call was made to increase the drag in the attempt to achieve some angle. The drag was eventually wound up to 22kgs and the fish slowly budged. Over a period of 10 minutes we had lifted an almost dead, 130kg marlin to the surface. The Rod and Reel performed outstandingly and was more than capable of the task. I love it when a plan comes together. Congrats guys - great result!!
