In 1993 Education and Culture Minister Dale Bisnauth, under the policy direction of President C B Jagan, attempted to formally diminish the national importance and scope of Mash celebrations in Guyana. It was only after a public outcry that they backed off. What we are seeing now is a resumption of this policy to eliminate this celebration altogether from the national consciousness (Hubert Wong).
