MATCH REPORT – St Aidan’s V Hild Bede 2:4 Sunday morning, the sun was shining, the birds were singing as Aidan’s set off early to warm-up for the upcoming match. Such confidence was taken in our abilities, that we were only permitted to roll the ball along the ground making for a solid warm up. With an impressive 18 Aidanites, we were brimming with confidence as we looked upon the measly 4 members the appeared to be Hild Bede. However, the clock struck 12 and a posse of the opposition strode across the pitch (many of whom had clearly been heavy on the protein shakes)… Strange new goalies were strapped across each goal and the match commenced. Vikki took starting position, setting the tone for a fine performance throughout. Team Aidan’s started well, with a large part of the first half being around Hild Bede’s goal, due to Tims ability to run rings around their rugby players. Unfortunately, we couldn’t break through the fabric of the goalie and Hild Bede managed to score a sly goal on the break. Substitutions were made and Captain Vicki stepped up. Within a few minutes she was running to the goal set up by Jorge and scythed by what could only be described as a muddy giant, a penalty was awarded and she scored with aplomb, levelling the scores. We held on to half time with stellar defence from Paul, Mike, Zara and with some truly insane looking running from Ollie. Rested and with fresh legs on the second half began with Aidan’s now shooting away from the unstable goal, we began play positively with the ball moving forwards consistently and good build up play from Frankie Vice-Captain Adam received the ball behind the goal, ran around it and then flung it hopefully over his shoulder in to the top corner taking Aidan’s in to their first lead in about a year. Confidently we looked forward to victory, this hope was dashed a few minutes later by a great run from one of the more serious players on the Hild Bede team. With the lead gone and some good chances missed from Adam and Red, Aidan’s fell to disarray at the back, letting Hild Bede score another goal. Some desperate defending and forgetfulness of the rules led to a penalty being given away, which was scored. Aidans fought back as best they could getting close to scoring a few times before the final whistle blew. Despite the result we feel postive at the performance with all the freshers and first timers performing well and the loss halved from our defeat against a worse hatfield team. A bit more tactical awareness and changes to the substitution system (coming soon) the next match could very well end in victory. Dick of the Day – Red for giving away a penalty and missing an open goal Man of the Match - Jorge for his superb midfield play, including a magnificent interception. Women of the Match- Helen, Frankie, Isobel, Emily, Chloe and Lisa for their splendid performance against guys more then double their size with about an hour of practice time, lots of potential in them.
