MATCH SUMMARIES November 9, 2013 Elite League Fife Flyers 4 Nottingham Panthers 2 What a turnaround in fortune for both these sides as Flyers put behind them a 7-1 hammering at the hands of Panthers only last Sunday to shock last year’s league champions back in their own Kirkcaldy barn. This was Flyers first home league win of the season, having fallen in their previous six but a Panthers side minus several of their first choice stars through injury lost out for the third time in their last five starts. It was the visitors who were first to score when Joe Jensen netted after only 5.09 but on a shorthanded play Flyers levelled thanks to Danny Stewart at 9.55. Panthers then went back in from with a shorthanded goal of their own at 14.27 with Matt Francis edging his side into a lead they held to the opening period break. An early second period goal for Flyers saw Kyle Horne level at 2-2 before a scrap saw Matt Nickerson (Flyers) and Leigh Salters (Panthers) become entangled. Flyers had certainly gained in confidence however and late in the period went 3-2 ahead when Derek Roehl scored the third shorthanded goal of the night at 39.19. Try as they might Panthers could find no way through the well drilled home defence in the third period. A great chance was lost when Salters failed to convert on a penalty shot given with only 2.30 remaining and then when goaltender Neil Conway was pulled Bobby Chaumont fired the puck into the unguarded net to give his side the insurance they needed with 58 seconds left. The game finished in a feisty not with four fighting calls handed out to Flyers Jordan Fulton, along with Nickerson again and Panthers Steven Lee and Tuuka Makela, with Lee picking up an instigator call that will rule him out of his teams next game. Period Scores: 1-2, 2-0, 1-0 Penalty Mins: Fif 2+15+10=27, Not 8+13+44=65 Powerplay: Fif 1/8, Not 0/4 Shots On: Kevin Regan 6+8+10=24, Neil Conway 13+10+9=32 Referee: Neil Wilson Coventry Blaze 2 Sheffield Steelers 4 Head coach Doug Christiansen’s return behind the bench boosted Steelers to a road win at the Skydome against Blaze with a 3-0 lead just before the halfway mark being enough of a cushion to stave off a home fightback. It was the perfect start for the visitors as they hit the front at 5.19 with Nate DiCasmirro on target and at 11.16 doubled their lead to take a 2-0 advantage into period two thanks to a scoring shot by Drew Fata. On a penalty shot Rob Sirianni added a third for Steelers at 27.31 but at 29.23 on the powerplay the home side were on the board with Adam Henrich firing home. Nip and tuck in the third session with no lack of effort form either side. One further goal did come the way of Blaze but it was too little too late when Michael Henrich scored his first goal in 12 games, counting only as a consolation in the end as Steelers claimed both road points. Period Scores: 0-2, 1-2, 1-0 Penalty Mins: Cov 2+2+2=6, She 4+4+6=14 Powerplay: Cov 1/7, She 0/2 Shots On: Mike Zacharias 11+14+10=35, Frank Doyle 10+13+15=38 Referee: Dean Will Smith Hull Stingrays 0 Belfast Giants 2 It may have been a low scoring encounter but in the shot count certainly not so as Giants massively outshot their hosts 62-19 on the way to a road victory that takes them four points clear at the top of the standings. In the opening session Giants outshot Stingrays by 22 to 6 but only had a goal by Dustin Whitecotton at 6.30 on the powerplay to show for it. It was a very similar pattern in period two with 23 to 6 the advantage to Giants in shots and one further goal courtesy of a shot from Calvin Elfring at 25.04. Stingrays simply could not get enough rubber through the effective Giants defence and Stephen Murphy was solid between the pipes to post 19 saves on the way to his second shutout of the season. Period Scores: 0-1, 0-1, 0-0 Penalty Mins: Hull 8+8+4=20, Bel 6+4+4=14 Powerplay: Hul 0/6, Bel 1/9 Shots On: Ben Bowns 22+23+17=62, Stephen Murphy 6+6+7=19 Referee: Michael Hicks
