MAUI SURF UPDATE JULY 29th: Hawaii is under a Tropical Storm - TopicsExpress

MAUI SURF UPDATE JULY 29th: Hawaii is under a Tropical Storm Warning and surfing is not advised today or Tuesday. Very dangerous rough and unpredictable seas should be expected today and tomorrow as Flossie hits the Hawaiian Islands, with seas upward of 15 to 20 foot likely, possibly higher in some areas, especially along the east and northeastern coastline. Our windward shores should start out today at overhead levels with a quick rise to triple overhead levels this afternoon. Both south and north facing shores should also see rising surf into the head-high range or higher. Aside from that, a small to sometimes moderate southeast swell is passing through the island chain which should peak today and will continue through Tuesday, possibly into Wednesday. Another moderate south-southwest swell is expected to arrive Wednesday morning to keep some surf going through the end of the work week. This swell was generated by a storm that passed south of New Zealand last week that made a turn into our swell window as it weakened and tracked toward French Polynesia. This energy could reach near advisory levels at its peak. Currently, a weak fetch is pushing our way from east-southeast of New Zealand which may be able to produce a small to moderate swell for early next week, but that is all that is expected out of the South Pacific through the period. Looking farther out, another tropical storm is forecast to develop later in the week, following a similar path and lifecycle as Flossie. More details to come as that storm progresses. Please be safe over the next couple of days and do not underestimate the chaotic power of the surf.
