MAYA... ... 5 : SAISABARA SILALEKHA... TRANSLATORS NOTE While reading Kanishkas Maya one is reminded of Coleridges Kubla Khan, one of the finest romantic poems. While going through Holinsheds Chronicles Coleridge, as he was under the intoxication of opium, fell fast asleep. He dreamt Kubla Khan giving comand for the building of a beautiful pleasure dome sunny and yet with caves of ice. His dream over, he wrote Kubla Khan under the spell of the dream, which is known today as one of the best poems, ever written in English literature. Kanishkas Maya is also a dream-product. He saw a wonderful dream in which Mana Aunty turned into a beautiful lotus flower and vanished into the open space. And then the thrilling voice that came floating to the earth from the space. It was Maya-illusion- that captured the entire being of the poet and immerging him into a sea of tears and sorrows, gave to the world some immortal poetic lines through him. Maya is a voluminous poetic treatise- divided into five Books. The experience starts from infancy and travels through childhood, adolescence, youth and old age. No area of human activity is left out. It is simultaneously earthly and heavenly, physical and metaphysical, mundane and spiritual. Kanishka is basically known as a short story and fiction writer. But the wounderful lines of poetry Maya surprises the readers and they are compelled to say O, here is a poet who had hidden his talent for so long a period of time. Maya is originally written in Odia. The poet has created wonderful rhythm in his Odia poetic lines. While rendering them into English, the major loss has been the loss of rhythm. However the entire poem written in five chapters, is written in small, sonorous, pithy, powerful stanzas that send aesthetic pleasure immediately into the heart of the reader. Tarun Kumar Sahu
