MCP for Economic Independence Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential candidate, Lazarous Chakwera, says Malawi can attain economic independence through elimination of corruption and public resource abuse in the government and civil service systems. In an exclusive interview with The Daily Times in Blantyre on Saturday, Chakwera said various studies conducted in the country show that almost 40 percent of government money is lost through corruption annually. “It is possible to run the economy on our own, therefore we must do the best we can to deal with corruption,” he said. Chakwera said it is unfortunate that Malawians are still reeling in abject poverty despite availability of reasonable resources locally as well as aid from development partners since independence. “Corruption has robbed a lot from Malawians. That is why Malawi Congress Party will ensure that strategies have been put in place in order to deal with the malpractice,” he said. The MCP leader also pointed out that politicians should change their mindset if the country is to develop. “Political parties in government should be able to continue projects left behind by others. Projects of benefit to the country should not be abandoned just because they were initiated by a previous government. Rather, the government in power should find ways of maintaining or improving on such projects,” said Chakwera. He further said the country is facing a lot of economic challenges because it is not producing enough for export. Chakwera said despite maize being a priority crop, it is also not produced in abundance to meet national and export demand. “We need to empower middle sized farmers so that they produce more for export. This should be done with various crops not only maize,” he said timesmediamw/malawi-congress-partys-chakwera-for-economic-independence/
