MEDIA ADVISORY SAN DIEGO MIRAMAR COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT A GO FOR Friday, MAY 16, 1 PM -- No Fire Threat to Campus, Extra Measures Address Extreme Heat MIRA MESA — Despite fires burning in North County, the San Diego Miramar College campus in Mira Mesa remains unthreatened. Classes are being held today and Friday. Canopies are in place and extra measures are being taken to address expected high temperatures for the Friday, 1 PM ceremony. According to Adela Jacobson, Dean of Student Affairs, the College is moving ahead with plans to celebrate the 2014 graduating class as originally scheduled. Extra measures to address extreme heat include graduate indoor orientation and line-up; extra large canopies to shelter all guests, stage party and graduates during speeches and conferral of degrees; small sections of students to be ushered to the stage to minimize time under the sun; cool zone for families and guests; free water stations; and assorted cold beverages to be made available for guests who prefer something other than water. Due to the uncertainty of existing and possible new fires and weather conditions, graduates and guests are encouraged to check the San Diego Miramar College website (sdmiramar.edu) or SanDiegoMiramarCollege Facebook or SDMiramar Twitter accounts for updates. The 38th Annual Commencement Exercises will be held on the Compass Green at the San Diego Miramar College campus -- 998 associate degrees and certificates of achievement will be awarded to 881 graduates.
