MEDIA ALERT ATT: REPORTERS, ASSIGNMENT EDITORS 04 October 2014 MEC TO MEET WITH HELEN VALE COMMUNITY ON PLAN FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT EAST LONDON---------- Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Helen Sauls- August will meet with the Helen Vale Community to present plans by the department to de- densify the overly populated area. Many Helenvale people were forcibly removed from South End in the Port Elizabeth Area through the Group Areas Act of 1970. Through this Act, big families were placed in 2 roomed houses. Currently there are families with over 20 people currently residing in these two roomed houses. The de-densification of Helen vale in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro will be fast tracked using the Parsonsvlei land recently acquired by the department to ensure that the Helen vale community is offered an opportunity of a better life through a De- densification programme that will cater for all income groups. The Parsonsvlei land will also accommodate interested civil servants such as nurses, police and teachers that earn between R 7500- R15 000. The plan is create a new neighborhood in a medium and high rise density units through a total mix mode development which will be the first neighborhood in the Metro comprising of medium and high rise density units through a total mixed mode human settlements development. This meeting is held to commence World Habitat Day activities observed on the first Monday of October. This year’s World Habitat Day theme is ‘Voices from slums’ to recognize life in slums, give voice to slum dwellers for improving quality of living conditions in existing slums. The campaign will focus on giving voice to people who have lived or live in slums or other vulnerable urban contexts.
