MEDIA RELEASE Thursday November 28, 2013 - 1:15 pm Flood Bulletin #3- Caparo River Remains Swollen Expected Rainfall At 12:15pm today, the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TT MET Service) has updated the riverine flood alert for Trinidad that was issued yesterday, Wednesday 26th November, 2013 at 6:00pm. The TT Met Service is maintaining the riverine flood alert for Trinidad, having regard to the most recent rainfall activity associated with the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Over the past few hours, some parts of Trinidad continue to experience showers, which have been moderate to heavy in intensity. Water Courses Levels Although reports from the Water Resources Agency (WRA) indicate that water levels in most of the nation’s major rivers have receded to below threshold levels, they remain significantly high. The Caparo River in particular is swollen. Additional run-off from today’s rainfall can exacerbate conditions. It has been forecasted that further rainfall activity is expected over the next 2 to 4 hours with a gradual improvement thereafter. Areas still being affected It should be noted that the Mayaro/Manzanilla Road is still under water and areas in Mayaro continue to be impacted by flooding. The ODPM, as the National Disaster Office is still monitoring the situation and all first responder agencies remain on alert so that assistance can be rendered to affected persons. Members of the Disaster Management Units of the various Municipal Corporations are continuing with their assessments. Therefore, citizens in general, and those residing in low-lying areas especially around and along the Caparo River in particular, are advised to be on the alert for rising river levels and possible overspill. The ODPM will also like to remind citizens to contact the ODPM’s customer care centre at 511 if impacted.
