MEDIA RELEASE VALUE OF REGIONAL TOURISM ACKNOWLEDGED Shadow Minister for Tourism, Bob Baldwin; Chair of Australian Regional Tourism Network (ARTN), David Sheldon and Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott at the National Tourism Alliance function held at Parliament House, Canberra Shadow Minister for Tourism, Bob Baldwin acknowledges the role of the Australian Regional Tourism Network and the value of tourism to regional communities and local economies, at a tourism function at Parliament House, tonight. David Sheldon, Chair of ARTN commented, “this was a great opportunity to raise the profile of regional tourism and our members at the national level and that now is the time for the industry to come together as one voice”. Mr Sheldon has been actively meeting with industry leaders and both sides of parliament on his trip to Canberra this week. The Australian Regional Tourism Network, as a member of the National Tourism Alliance supports the ‘Don’t tax tourism’ campaign and will continue to work with the national body to set policy especially as it relates to regions and ARTN members. Tourism continues to be a major economic driver for regions, with 46 cents in every dollar of tourism expenditure being spent in regional Australia. The tourism and hospitality industry employ over 1,074 million Australians with tourism related employment in regional areas generating over 220,000 jobs in 2011.
