MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Zambia mourns with Kenya, condemns “senseless” attack UNITED NATIONS, Friday, September 27, 2013 – Zambia has condemned the terrorist attack on Kenya that left about 67 people dead. Foreign Affairs Minister Honourable Wylbur Simuusa offered Zambia’s condolences to the families, the people and the Government of the Republic of Kenya. “I wish, on behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Zambia, to offer sincere condolences to the people and the Government of Kenya on the loss of life that has arisen from the senseless violence that was unleashed in the last few days in Nairobi. Our thoughts and support are with Kenya,” said Mr Simuusa at UN Headquarters in New York. The Minister condemned the violence and terrorist attacks in Kenya when he addressed a special meeting on the Regional Oversight Mechanism of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the DRC and the Great Lakes Region earlier this week. African Presidents continued addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, where they highlighted the progress the continent is making to reduce poverty and improve the wellbeing of their people. Over 120 heads of state and government have been addressing the 68th Session of UN General Assembly during its week-long High level General debate that started on Tuesday this week. His Excellency, Mr Michael Chilufya Sata, the President of the Republic of Zambia, was one of the 30 Heads of State and Government that addressed the General Assembly at the start of the General Debate. Addressing the General Assembly on Thursday, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, said his country’s progress had stalled in the areas of eradication of poverty and hunger, child mortality, universal access to maternal and reproductive health, and access to potable water and sanitation, mainly due to lack of financial capacity. Other Presidents that addressed the General Assembly on Thursday up to late night included Hifikepunye Pohamba (Namibia), John Dramani Mahama (Ghana), Mohamed Moncef Marzouki (Tunisia), Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo (Equatorial Guinea), Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (Somalia), Manuel Serifo Nhamajo (Guinea-Bissau’s transitional President) and Mahmoud Abbas (Palestine). Prime Ministers Shinzo Abe (Japan), Motsoahe Thomas Thabane (Lesotho), John Key (New Zealand), Elio Di Rupo (Belgium), Laurent Salvador Lamothe (Haiti), Nicolas Tiangaye (Central African Republic), Iurie Leanca (Moldova) and Vice-President of South Sudan James Wani Igga also addressed the General Assembly on Thursday. Three of the five Permanent Members of the UN – United Kingdom and Northern Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Nicholas Clegg, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and China’s Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi – also addressed the General Assembly on Friday. According to the list of speakers, Presidents Jakaya Kikwete (Tanzania), Ibrahim Boubacar Keita (Mali) and Al Hadji Yahya Jammeh (The Gambia) addressed the General Assembly on Friday.
