MEDICAL ALERT: Venezuela-Chikungunya. According to international authorities, more than 35 locally acquired confirmed cases, and more than 55 imported cases of chikungunya have been reported in Venezuela since late June 2014, though the actual case numbers may be 5 times greater. Locally acquired cases have been reported in the states of Carabobo, Guarico, Aragua, and Vargas; the latter 2 states border Distrito Capital (Caracas). The many foci of indigenous infection and the prevalence of the vector may be indicative of the onset of a large epidemic in this populous country. Confirmed cases have also been reported from the states of Amazonas, Bolivar, Portuguesa, and Zulia, and it is unknown if these cases are locally acquired or imported. Chikungunya is an arboviral infection transmitted by mosquitoes. Travelers are advised to practice daytime insect precautions.
