Although Derek is by no means the originator of the blast beat, he is one of its biggest pioneers and educators, propelling blast beat drumming to the forefront of modern playing in ways no other extreme drummer has done before him. Outside of his career as a performer, Derek broke new ground as a music educator in 2006 when he released his instructional book, The Evolution of Blast Beats. The book was the first of its kind, documenting the history and composition of extreme drumming. In 2009, he teamed up with Hudson Music to release an instructional DVD titled, Blast Beats Evolved. Derek has also become one of todays most popular clinicians performing for audiences all over the world. About Germán Baratto: Percussionist and producer Germán Baratto is Meinls Percussion Artist Relations Coordinator/Percussion Product Specialist. Versed in both American pop and Latin genres, Germán is an expert in drum set and percussion and is a busy player on the Nashville music scene. Germán has also conducted drum set and latin percussion clinics in the U.S. and out of the country in Bogota, Colombia and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Germán completed his Bachelor in Arts at the University of Puerto Rico and did additional studies at the Puerto Rico Conservatory and Berklee School of Music. Upon completing his undergraduate degree, Germán attended Middle Tennessee State University where he earned his Master in Arts in Jazz Studies and Percussion. Prior to his position at Meinl, Germán worked as an adjunct Professor at Middle Tennessee State University and as the Percussion Coordinator for the Oakland High School Marching Band. In addition, he worked as adjunct faculty at the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama, and collaborated with the Global Education Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
