MEMA Holds Conference Call on Earthquakes in CT PLAINFIELD, Conn. (WGGB) — As many as a dozen minor earthquakes have occurred in Connecticut since January 8, with the latest one taking place early this morning at 4:39 p.m. in Plainfield. MEMA reports they held a conference call with the Weston Observatory today in regards to all the quakes which are not far from our borders here in Massachusetts. The state emergency management agencies in Connecticut and Vermont, and the Northeast States Emergency Consortium also took part in the call. One of the items discusses was the number of earthquakes that have occurred in such a short period of time. The Weston Observatory says these earthquakes are associated with an earthquake “swarm,” also known as a series or burst of earthquakes in succession. MEMA notes the last time an earthquake “swarm” took place in New England, was back in 2006-2007 in Bar Harbor, Maine. Emergency personnel including the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, and the Weston Observatory will continue to gather more information and monitor the earthquake activity in the state. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission reports that there have been no operational issues or concerns at any of the nuclear power plants in CT, RI, and MA as a result of these recent earthquakes. The strongest one occurred on January 12 with a 3.3 magnitude and was felt across southern New England as well as parts of Massachusetts.
