MEMBER AND SOCIETY NEWS Congratulations to Signature member Tiffany Miller Russell who has just been selected by our new Awards committee to be the recipient of the DON ECKELBERRY AWARD. Don Eckelberry was a renowned bird artist, writer and speaker on bird life and conservation and a longtime member of the Society. This award is a trip to the Asa Wright Nature Center in Trinidad where he spent time over the years. The award is a ten day field trip to Asa Wright Nature Center where Don Eckelberry got a lot of his inspiration. This award is open to SAA artists that work in either 2D or 3D work. Tiffany works in cut paper, a unique and interesting media. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in birds as a subject matter and some experience and with field sketching (although general ‘wildlife’ artists are eligible). The Award Committee will be looking for artists who submit work that shows familiarity with birds in nature, as well as skill and excellence in depicting birds in their artwork. Accuracy in drawing and an understanding of feather tracts and bird anatomy will be noted. In sum, the Eckelberry Scholarship Award is intended to provide promising bird artists with a unique opportunity to study and sketch birds in a lush and unusually accessible Neotropical setting. The Eckelberry Scholarship Award winner will be asked to provide sketches from the trip and possibly an original piece of artwork produced from the sketches which may be displayed at an SAA Annual Exhibition following the trip.
