MENDOCINO COAST MARITIME TRAFFIC RESEARCH VESSEL MELVILLE HEADED HOME TO LA JOLLA MSP picked up the southward (and homeward) bound 279 USA-flagged research ship MELVILLE on our AIS (Automatic Identification System) receiver @ 3:00 pm. And it wasnt named after the author of Moby Dick - it was named after (from Wikipedia) George Melville, a pioneer arctic explorer and Rear Admiral in the United States Navy, who was Chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering from 1887 to 1903. The vessel, no stranger to the Mendocino coast, left Newport, Oregon yesterday (3:58 pm) and is on its way south to its homeport of La Jolla, CA @ 15 mph. It left San Diego for the trip north September 9th. Heres a little background info on the vessel (from Wikipedia): R/V Melville – originally built as the USNS Melville (T-AGOR-14) -- is a research vessel operated by Scripps Institution of Oceanography for oceanographic research. The R/V Melville is the oldest active vessel in the academic research fleet, collectively known as the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System.
