MENTAL HEALTH POINT TO PONDER When I was counseling, I noticed - TopicsExpress

MENTAL HEALTH POINT TO PONDER When I was counseling, I noticed something and presented it to some of my colleagues. What I noticed is that a large percentage of people with mental health problems had two attributes. 1. Overly introspective and 2. Self absorbed and centered on self. I asked this question, Does self absorption create mental illness or does mental illness create self absorption? I didnt get an answer, however, in one early experiment at a mental institution a Dr discovered that getting people out in a garden tending to it either reduced or eliminated mental health problems. AA/NAs programs have a service oriented component. Service work, that is doing something without expecting something in return, reduced relapse. One had to Get out of their own head in order to be healthy. I know that doing yard work helped me get through the CPS crisis with my grandchildren. It helped bring some balance into the grieving process and gave me a medium by which to release my frustrations. I dont think it hurts one bit to volunteer to do things while a case is going on. It will help one think more clearly.
