MERMAIDS By Eddy Hawks LOS ANGELES, CA., April 7, 2014 -- When I think of Mermaids, I think of Ron Howards masterful and charming feature film called Splash and starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, O Brother, Where Art Thou? by Joel and Ethan Coen Brothers, starring George Clooney, John Turturro, John Goodman and Holly Hunter, and the Greek epic story by Homer called The Odyssey. I also think of Henri Matisse, the South of France, blue seas and oceans, summer vacations, and beautiful women who can heal the world of imaginary maladies that try to possess it. Mermaids, with their magical and seductive powers, are a powerful symbol of the modern and emancipated woman empowered by a contemporary existence that will continue to blossom throughout the years. For practically speaking, when we consider why we are here and what our purpose is in life, time and time again, women seem to be the heart of this purpose. In Hamburg, Germany, there is an incredible artist who has understood this existential fact. If you have ever had the opportunity of seeing a ballet by John Neumeier, the world-class choreographer and artistic director of the Hamburg Ballett, you will have experienced beautiful ballerinas weaving in and out of his choreography like mermaids. John Neumeier is one of my mentors who I will always value. I dedicate the following paintings in blue acrylic to John Neumeier and the Hamburg Ballet for their excellence in ballet and for setting a world standard that has inspired choreographers, dancers, and audiences around the world. Inspired by Kat Hawks, the love of my life, the Mermaid series will go on sale soon at an art exhibition that will be produced by ABLA International. All proceeds will support the performing artists of American Ballet of Los Angeles. For more information, please contact Eddy & Kat Hawks at (805) 636-5388 or americanballetoflosangeles@gmail.
