MERRY CHRISTMAS OK I am not going to dispute the undeniable - TopicsExpress

MERRY CHRISTMAS OK I am not going to dispute the undeniable fact that living in the TRNC can be extremely frustrating but I am sure you will agree with me that it can also be very rewarding. Look at the weather on this supposedly winter day for instance. It is December and the sun is shining, colours are vibrant and mother nature is joyous. I sat outside in my flimsy cardigan and soaked up the sun as I waited for my lift this morning and had difficulty in opening my eyes to watch the thousands of birds that were fluttering all over the place. It was that bright. Life here can not be described as being hard no matter how hard you tried. Thanks to a number of factors we do lead cushy and cushioned lives which probably is the main reason why we think so highly of ourselves. We never had to face real competition. We lead an existence in a cuckoon and thus get the impression that we are an insurmountable mighty mountain when in fact we are not even a mound. We do love to moan and groan and life in the TRNC gives us plenty of ammunition for that as well. For instance, take the rains that we had recently which had caused floods all over the place. The social media was full of photographs of our much maligned capital Nicosia that resembled a very shabby looking Venice. One photo of that day has been engrained on to my memory for forever. A picture of a lady friend who happened to be having lunch at a cafe when the floods hit the roads and she ventured to get into her car. She was pictured immersed (ankle deep) in the flood waters. Last week I happened to pass by that cafe early in the morning one day and the owners (two very good friends) shrieked and screamed when they saw me and inevitably I had morning coffee with them while we continued to shriek and scream and laugh. One of the topics that came up was the floods. I said “Yes I saw those pictures and what really caught my attention was not the sight of that lady friend immersed ankle deep in flood waters but the cars that were in the background. They were all 4X4 jeeps , BMWs Mercedes etc”. This prompted a hearty laughter from one of the cafe owners who kindly brought to my attention that the shoes on those flood water covered feet were Chanel. Than the manager of the newly opened patisserie next door came running and screaming. He was an old friend whom I had not seen for many years. We laughed and joked and I set out for my journey to the South to surrender myself to the competent hands of Yannis – for a hair cut. I decided against walking along the Dereboyu which of course is the main shopping and dining road of our capital and went into a side street. As soon as I had started walking down that deserted little street a black BMW stopped and a female friend clad in leather trousers and very chic and understated top got out of the car to give me a huge hug and kiss. While we were shouting, screaming, shrieking and laughing another car stopped. She was an old and mature friend insisting that I accept her offer of a lift. By this stage I was high with my morning intake of love and affection and attention, and decided that I wanted to get even higher. I marched resolutely towards the home of the mother of a friend who I knew was going to be delighted with my visit and was going to show it. And she did. When I knocked on their door and shouted her name the response which came immediately was “Is that you my lamb?” . “It is” I screamed, she came came out shouting and screamiNg and laughing , I ran towards her responding in kind, while her husband looked on in ill disguised amusement. It was a perfect start to a perfect day that could only be possible in the TRNC. So thank you TRNC and a very Merry Christmas and happy new Year to you.
