MESMERIZING music: Vincenzo Bellini’s tragic opera, I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Mantagues) is an Italian reworking of the story of Romeo and Juliet. Composed in only a month and a half starting in January of 1830, the story features the Capuleti and Montecchi is rival political factions rather than feuding families from Shakespeare. In Oh! quante volte, Giulietta longs for Romeo just before Romeo tries to persuade her to escape with him. Giulietta resists, declaring she would rather die of a broken heart.
