MICHIGAN CITY — A Panera Bread is on its way to Michigan City. Anchor Properties received unanimous approval to proceed with a Panera Bread drive-thru restaurant at the Michigan City board of zoning appeals meeting held May 30. The restaurant will be at the southwest corner of Franklin Street and Westwind Drive. Michael Ricke, a representative of Anchor Properties, presented a petition requesting Development Standard Variances for the proposed restaurant. The petition included four special use exceptions including the use of a drive-through window. Other special exceptions listed in the petition were the approval of a menu board and preview board behind the building, the reduction of drive-thru stacking requirements from ten vehicles to eight, and the location of an access drive. Although most Panera Bread restaurants do not have drive-through service, locations across the country will be converted over time, according to Ricke. “It’s something new Panera has started in the past year,” he said
